Placing a letterbox is more than hanging a box on the facade. Height, accessibility for the postman, material and water drainage determine whether you will enjoy it for years. In this knowledge base you will find the main points, with links to the sub-topics.
When placing a mailbox, three things are decisive: the location, the height and the method of mounting. Choose a location that is accessible all year round, even when it rains or freezes, and avoid a setup where the postman has to reach between parked cars or over a hedge. The insertion opening should face the public road or path, so that the postman does not have to reach over a fence.
Adjust the height to the user: comfortable for the postman and within reach for you. For concrete guidelines, we refer to the recommendations of bpost and to our separate page about height. Mount the mailbox securely on a flat, load-bearing surface. For wall mounting, use plugs and screws that suit the wall material; for a freestanding setup, choose a post or pillar that does not wobble.

There is no universal European standard that makes every mailbox in Belgium mandatory. What does count are the agreements of the postal services and the practical requirements that follow from the insertion opening, the opening for parcels and accessibility. bpost publishes guidelines on, among other things, the insertion opening and placement; these are leading if you want to be sure that your mail is delivered correctly.
To be clear: we do not invent figures or legal standards. Consult the current guidelines of bpost or a recognised sales point for exact dimensions and heights. What we can say: a spacious insertion opening, an easily accessible flap and a sturdy mounting prevent most problems. Models with a parcel compartment, such as certain versions, additionally require sufficient space under the flap so that a parcel does not get stuck.

The material determines how well your mailbox is resistant to weather and wind. Aluminium is light, rust-free and easy to maintain; it can be powder-coated in many colours. We work with aluminium and offer more than 2000 RAL colours, so that the mailbox matches the facade or the joinery. During placement, pay attention to water drainage: a slight slope and a free passage under the box prevent rainwater from pooling.
Maintenance is limited: wipe occasionally with a damp cloth, check the flap and keep the combination lock, if your model has one, smooth. A combination lock requires no key and is handy for those who often share the code, but it remains mechanical: dirt and frost can affect its operation, so keep it clean.
