Do not use a scouring pad, steel wool or aggressive degreasers. These can dull the paint or cause fine scratches in which dirt settles. It is also best to keep a pressure washer away from the letterbox: the jet can push water between the panels and damage the finish.
If you have a model with a combination lock or a parcel compartment, also clean the moving parts carefully. A slightly damp cloth around the flap and the lock keeps everything smooth. Avoid oil or grease on the paint itself; use lubrication only where the manufacturer indicates.

Just make sure that water can drain away at the bottom and that the flap keeps moving freely. That prevents moisture build-up and keeps the mechanism smooth.
In autumn and winter, leaves, salt and moisture accumulate more quickly. An extra wipe-down after a storm or after road salt keeps the paint and the aluminium in good condition. In summer, a dry cloth is enough to remove dust and pollen.
